Citation: EBM Reviews. Scottish Intensive Care Society EBM Group. Miles B. Non-Invasive Ventilation and prevention of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia. 2004. Non-invasive ventilation has been an intervention considered in several RCTs, some of which have included VAP as an outcome. These studies involved a heterogeneous mix of patients and it seems unwise to group them together for analysis. However each is worthy of consideration: RCT of NIV in acute respiratory failure: Massimo Antonelli, Giorgio Conti et al: A comparison of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation and conventional mechanical ventilation inpatients with acute respiratory failure. NEJM 1998; 339:429-435. CAT. RCT of NIV in COPD: Laurent Brochard, Jordi Mancebo et al: Noninvasive ventilation for acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. NEJM 1995; 333:817-22. CAT. RCT of NIV in immunosuppressed: Gilles Hilbert, Didier Gruson et al:
Noninvasive ventilation in immunosuppressed patients with pulmonary infiltrates,
fever and acute respiratory failure. NEJM 2001;344:481-7.
CAT. RCT of NIV in acute respiratory failure after solid organ transplantation: Massimo Antonelli, Giogio Conti et al: Noninvasive ventilation for treatment of acute respiratory failure in patients undergoing solid organ transplantation. JAMA 2000; 283:235-241. CAT.
