Scottish Intensive Care Society Evidence-Base Medicine Group Newsletter March 2004
The last twelve months have been a good year for the EBM Group. The second annual meeting was held at the Stirling Educational Centre in January 2003. Sixteen delegates attended, many of who have now contributed substantially to the work of the Group. February 2003 saw the launch of the groups’ web site (www.sicsebm.org.uk). The purpose of the site is to provide the Scottish Intensive Care community with an easily accessible EBM resource and a medium for the group to publish its work. The site contains a wide range of EBM material as well as reviews of several intensive care topics that should be of interest to EBM novices as well as experts. Since its launch, the site has proved to be very popular with over 22,000 visitors. The first year’s statistics were presented at the societies research meeting in January of this year. To date, four intensive care topics have been reviewed and published on the site; ARDS (by Brian Cuthbertson), Gastric Prophylaxis (Chris Cairns & Tim Walsh), Sepsis (Malcolm Daniel) and tight glycaemic control (Kevin Rooney). Critical appraisals of all the papers used in the reviews can be accessed via the site. There are also links to the original papers. Currently the Group is reviewing non-invasive ventilation (Michael Macmillan), therapeutic hypothermia (Chris Cairns), proning and nitric oxide in ARDS (Brian Cuthbertson), nutrition (Gill Harris) and infection control (David Swann). Several of these reviews will be presented at the joint SICS EBM and Research Groups meeting in June of this year and then published on the website. As part of our future development we would like to encourage more people to contribute to the work of the group. We would welcome critical appraisals of any published papers, either as part of a topic review, or as a ‘stand alone’ appraisal. We would particularly welcome appraisals of ‘classic’ papers. Any of the steering group members would be happy to help you become familiar with the appraisal process (they can be contacted through the web site). There are also instructions on the site that may encourage you to take the plunge into the world of evidence-based medicine. We look forward to being inundated with submissions to the group and hope to see many of you at the meeting in June. Chris Cairns, March 2004 |
