Preventing Catheter-related Blood Stream Infection – summary of the evidence

  • There is no strong evidence that choosing the subclavian over the interval jugular route leads to a decrease in CVCrBSIs. However, the subclavian site may be associated with less catheter colonisations. The clinical significance of this is unclear. (7 cats) Link.

  • Antisepsis of insertion site with chlorhexidine.(5 cats). Link.

  • Consider the use antiseptic catheters.(21 cats). Link.

  • Use needleless connectors. (One cat). Link.

  • Maximal sterile barrier precautions should be used. These include donning a disposable cap, mask, gown and gloves and use of a large drape. (One cat). CAT.

Bear in mind that the lack of evidence of a beneficial effect is not evidence of a lack of beneficial effect.
